A day after a major fire in the city’s second-largest furniture market in Jogeshwari destroyed close to 250 shops, a body was recovered from the rubble on Saturday morning. The charred body has not been identified yet, fire brigade officials said.
The fire was doused only after six hours of firefighting operations at 6.40pm on Friday. The cooling operations were on till late Saturday evening. Till Friday evening, there were no reports of missing people or casualties.
“The body was recovered from the site on Saturday morning and could not be identified,” said an officer from the civic body’s disaster management department. The fire brigade also confirmed that there were at least five cylinder blasts on Friday.
The first fire call was at 12.57pm on Friday, after which 4 fire engines were rushed to the spot. After around 15 minutes from the first call, the fire was declared a level-3 (major fire) incident and 12 fire engines and 6 ambulances were rushed to the spot. The fire was later declared a level-4 incident.
25 people and one fireman had suffered minor injuries in the incident.
The furniture market, located on SV Road and which comprises at least 1,000 shops, is the second-largest furniture market in the city.
Around 500 students of the HMW school and junior college were also evacuated and assembled at Pratiksha Nagar school, a civic school, as a precautionary measure.
This is not the first fire incident in the congested alleys of the market. Earlier, there were fire incidents in 2002 and 2009. more….
