A massive accident was averted at a city based hospital on Saturday night. A fire broke out in the first floor Chest Block of Calcutta National Medical College.
Immediately, patients were evacuated and as many as three fire tenders were pressed into service. Disaster Management Group officials and fire fighters including officials of Kolkata Police were rushed to the spot. Primary examination revealed that the fire broke out from a refrigerator of the hospital through a short-circuit.
Meanwhile, the fire department and Kolkata Police will look into the matter to find the cause of the fire. Fortunately, a re-run of the AMRI hospital incident was prevented by the vigilant hospital staff. The hospital authorities doused the fire and there were no casualties.
“The hospital staff extinguished the fire even before our tenders reached the spot. The fire is in control now and no one has been hurt,” said a senior fire department official.
