A huge fire destroyed four buildings, several businesses and left some without a home in Isabella County tonight.
Police say the fire started around 4:30 this afternoon on Wright Avenue in downtown Shepherd.
The buildings destroyed were historic in the village of Shepherd.
They held a special place in many hearts — many say it’s hard to see them go like this
“The downtown district of Shepherd is kind of their claim to fame — their old buildings the old style — so it is kind of a loss in that term,” said Village Police Chief Michael Main.
This was the scene as fire crews worked to douse the smoke and flames.
It took several hours to get the large fire under control.
“They’re not constructed in the way normal code buildings are — so when fire breaks into them so they spread very easily — the mortar and brick are very old and crack easily, which causes the fire to spread as well it goes very quickly,” Main said. Read More
