Trichy: Four people of a family, including two girls, were charred to death in a fire accident that took place at their house in a slum in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar here in the early hours of Wednesday. An electrical short circuit from a lamp post was stated to be the reason for the fire.
The deceased were identified as Murugan, 37, a coolie, his wife Chithra, 32, their two daughters, Kavipriya, 7, a Class Two student and Devipriya, 4. The couple’s elder daughter, Janapriya, 9, escaped from the tragedy as she was staying in her grandmother’s house in another area.
Neighbours said the fire broke out at around 3am and engulfed the hut where the family was living. It was found that the kitchen area caught fire initially and later spread to other parts of the house. Police said the fire might have been caused due to electrical short circuit from a lamp post near their house.
It was assumed that once the fire broke out, Murugan attempted to open the main door which was locked inside. But he could not do so as the fire engulfed the front portion. So, the couple tried to save their children by putting them in an almirah and embracing them. Unfortunately, the fire refused to die as the speeding wind of the season fuelled it further.
The neighbours could not hear the family members’ cries as all of them were fast asleep when the fire accident occurred. They woke up after the heat from the flames began to spread at around 4am. They swung into action and made their attempts to extinguish the fire.
Meanwhile, the fire service personnel also reached the spot upon getting the information. Unfortunately, they could not come in close proximity of the site due to narrow roads in the area where around 50 houses are located.
The fire also spread to cattle shed where a cow and four chicks perished in the fire. One of the cows escaped with major burn injuries.
District collector Jayashree Muralidharan, city police commissioner Shailesh Kumar Yadav and other officials also rushed to the spot.
The accident left the future of one of their daughters Janapriya at stake with the relatives making an appeal to the district administration to provide necessary help. It was said that the state government would soon announce some assistance to the girl. Meanwhile, the district collector also gave some relief measures to her.
