BHUBANESWAR: Tension prevailed at Rameswarpur in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday after a train engine ran over a biker and hit an auto-rickshaw injuring eight passengers.
A mob set the engine afire after the incident and manhandled the loco-pilot, sources said.
After fire brigade doused the fire, people pelted stones at another express train that was coming on the parallel track. A RPF officer, Ramesh Biswal, was injured after being attacked by the mob.
Preliminary inquiry by the railway police indicated the gate of a manned level crossing was kept open mistakenly when the engine was approaching, which caused the mishap. East Coast Railway (ECoR) has ordered a high-level inquiry.
“There might have been a communication gap between the level-crossing authorities and engine driver. The inquiry will be conducted by a senior divisional safety officer. He will submit the report within a week,” said an ECoR officer.
The ECoR announced compensation of Rs 50,000 to the kin of the deceased, Rs 25,000 for the grievously injured persons and Rs 5,000 for those, who sustained minor injuries.
