Congress protests in Rajkot over 'police inaction' in game zone fire incident

Congress on Saturday held a protest in front of the Police Commissioner's office in Gujarat's Rajkot, alleging that the cops are trying to protect accused responsible for the TRP game zone fire that killed at least 27 people on May 25.Family members of those who died in the incident and an injured person also joined the protest, led by Congress MP Genni Ben Thakor, MLAs Jignesh Mewani, and Amit Chavda.Congress demanded the removal of senior police officer Subhash Trivedi as the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and also sought Rs 1 crore compensation for the families, instead of Rs 4 lakh. They picketed the commissioner's office and held a roadblock.Congress alleges that the SIT is working to protect BJP councillors in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. The party demanded that "genuine officers" should be included in the probe team.A young man, who was injured in the fire, arrived at the protest in an ambulance and was taken to the Commissioner's Office on a stretcher.The protesters also clashed with the police, and a large number of Congress workers were detained.The Congress warned that if the government does not accept their demands, a Rajkot bandh will be declared on June 25.The Gujarat Police have so far arrested 10 people in connection with the fire. One accused died in the fire.The arrested individuals include the owner and manager of the game zone, three officers of Rajkot Municipal Corporation's Town Planning Department, and a station fire officer.
