No Events At Delhis JLN Stadium Anytime Soon, Fire Safety Concerns Prompt Action

New Delhi: The Delhi Fire Department has issued directives to the administrator of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JLN) and cancelled the fire safety certificate of the Samrat Hotel in Chanakyapuri due to non-compliance with fire safety regulations. These actions come in the wake of recent incidents and lapses in fire safety measures. As per a Times of India report, in a letter dated March 15, the fire department instructed the JLN stadium administrator to cease all sporting events and functions held within the premises until adequate fire safety measures are implemented. The decision follows an incident that occurred on March 13, resulting in significant property damage and loss of life. Sources indicate that fire and life safety arrangements at the stadium failed to function properly during the incident.Furthermore, an enquiry revealed that the stadium's fire safety certificate has lapsed and is yet to be renewed, further highlighting the urgency of addressing safety concerns. The fire department emphasised that the premises should not be utilised for events until fire safety systems are repaired, rectified, and the fire safety certificate is renewed. The incident at JLN Stadium, which occurred in the lower tier basement near the P-1 tunnel, prompted swift action from authorities. A case has been registered under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after one individual, identified as Amit, was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at the hospital. In a parallel development, the fire department revoked the fire safety certificate of the Samrat Hotel following a lack of compliance with safety norms. Despite previous warnings and an allotted six-month period for rectification, the hotel failed to address the identified shortcomings. As a result, the fire safety certificate issued to the hotel last year has been cancelled with immediate effect, and the hotel has been instructed to cease operations until fire safety arrangements are fully compliant.Delhi Fire Services director Atul Garg expressed disappointment at the continued non-compliance by both JLN Stadium and Samrat Hotel with fire safety directives, despite multiple reminders.
