Chennai: Sunday morning took a fiery turn for thousands of rail passengers in Tamil Nadu as a crude oil tanker on a freight train caught fire near Thiruvallur, bringing train services between Chennai and Arakkonam to a grinding halt. The incident, which occurred in the early hours around 5am, forced Southern Railway to suspend overhead power supply and cancel or reroute several trains as a safety measure. As thick plumes of smoke rose from the Egattur area, emergency teams rushed to the site to contain the blaze. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but the disruption has left many passengers stranded or rescheduling their travel plans. One tanker reportedly ignited, and flames quickly spread to others. Train operations on the Chennai–Arakkonam route were suspended, impacting both passenger and freight services. Authorities immediately halted electric supply on the affected stretch, and firefighting operations are still underway. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
