Mumbai, 10 September 2025 – A fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon in a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building known as Shalimar Building, Siddhi Ganesh Society, Goregaon West. The blaze started in the common meter box area of a Ground-plus-5 residential structure located on S.V. Road, Road No. 04.

Time, Response and Evacuation

The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) first received the alarm around 12:18 PM, and by 12:25 PM the situation was declared a Level I fire.irefighters, in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), local police, Public Works Department, ward staff, the 108 ambulance services, and utility staff from Adani Electricity, were dispatched immediately.

Residents were evacuated as a precaution—some made their own way out of the building, others were moved to the terrace while smoke filled the staircases.

Extinguishment and Impact

Fire-fighting teams managed to bring the blaze under control within approximately two hours.Thankfully, no injuries or casualties have been reported. The fire’s origin is suspected to be an electrical fault in the common meter room, but investigations are underway to confirm exact causes. There was some disruption in traffic on S.V. Road due to fire tenders and emergency vehicles parked at the scene.

Context and Related Incidents

This is not an isolated event. Earlier, on 8–9 September, another severe fire occurred in a 23-storey SRA building in Dahisar (East), resulting in multiple injuries and at least one death. That incident raised serious concerns about fire safety protocols, working condition of firefighting equipment, alternate power supply, and other safety norms in high-rise SRA structures.

What Authorities Say

Fire Brigade officials have indicated that the response to the Goregaon fire was swift, helped by the cooperation of residents and multiple agencies.Meanwhile, investigations will probe into whether all safety and building regulation norms were followed, particularly in meter room installation, wiring, and evacuation access.

Conclusion

Though the fire in the Goregaon SRA building caused alarm, swift action by the Mumbai Fire Brigade and related civic agencies prevented casualties. This incident underscores the ongoing need to enforce safety norms in residential buildings and to ensure preventive measures are maintained, to avoid tragedies in future.
