On the night of 16th July 2025 ,a significant blaze erupted at Mangalam Organicsโ camphor/resin unit in Kumbhivali Village, Khopoli, Maharashtra. The incident began around 10:50โฏpm and rapidly spread through the plantโs machinery and production area. Multiple fire brigades were quickly dispatched from nearby towns, and while the flames were eventually contained, the plant suffered extensive structural and mechanical damage.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported, a fact attributed to the swift and coordinated emergency response by both company personnel and local authorities . Mangalam Organicsโpart of a Chennai-based chemical group known for its terpene and resin productsโimmediately suspended operations in the affected unit and began assessing the financial and operational fallout.
Company management has confirmed the site and inventory were fully insured and a claim has been lodged to cover damages, machinery replacement, and business interruption costs.Initial investigations suggest the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuitโa scenario similar to a 2015 blaze at the site that also originated in the resin unit, reinforcing concerns about legacy wiring and safety systems. The company has pledged a full inquiry and has initiated strict revalidation of its electrical safety protocols, fire detection systems, and emergency drills across all its facilities.
For the chemical manufacturing industry, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of robust fire safety infrastructure, comprehensive employee training, and regular auditsโespecially in plants handling flammable materials like camphor and resin. It also underscores the value of insurance readiness and crisis response planning in mitigating operational and financial risks.
