Here are a few fire protection tips for your home during autumn.

As the leaves turn colors, the weather cools, and you begin to prepare for the cold season. You’re also excited for Halloween and can’t wait to decorate your home. However, have you considered the fire safety risks during the fall? Here are a few fire protection tips for your home during autumn.

Routinely Change Smoke/Carbon Detector Batteries

It’s best to change your smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries when Daylight Savings Time begins and ends. This makes sure the alarms don’t fail when you turn the heat on in your home. Also, don’t forget to test the smoke alarms after changing the batteries. Remember to inspect all fire extinguishers are in functional mode when you adjust the clocks each season.

Thoroughly Inspect Your Heating Devices

As part of your fire protection plan, make sure a certified HVAC contractor inspects, cleans, and services your HVAC system. If you use space heaters, ensure there’s at least 3 feet of space around them. Don’t place fabrics on space heaters to dry; shut off heaters when going to bed. In addition, consider hiring a professional chimney sweeper to inspect and clean your chimney if your home has a fireplace.

Halloween Safety

Do you can’t wait to decorate your home and mastermind scary costumes for Halloween? Remember that Halloween safety is vital. So, keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources. Also, use battery-operated lights rather than candles in jack-o-lanterns as part of your fire protection plan.

Reduce Outdoor Fire Risks

Make it a habit to periodically remove leaves and other flammable debris building up around your home. Remember to prune trees and rake up leaves and twigs. Most importantly, don’t keep fuel in your home or garage. Additionally, keep your roof and gutters clear of debris and eliminate fuel from lawnmowers before storing them for winter.

Develop a Fire Escape Plan

Create a fire escape plan and practice it regularly. Designate an escape route for each area of your home and produce a meeting place outside. Also, practice escaping your home while staying low to avoid breathing in smoke and through windows using emergency ladders.

Follow these fire protection tips, and don’t let a fire ruin your autumn!
