Blaze Erupts Amid Pipeline Leak at Mori-5 Well
A powerful gas pipeline leakage at the ONGC-linked Mori-5 well in Andhra Pradesh’s Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district triggered a massive fire and explosion on Monday, January 5, 2026. Flames soared high into the sky, sending thick smoke across the area and prompting emergency operations from fire crews and ONGC officials.
What Actually Happened at the Site
The incident took place during production enhancement and repair operations at the Mori-5 gas well, operated by Deep Industries Ltd — a contractor working under Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). A sudden blowout released gas, which ignited almost immediately, sparking a fierce fireball that could be seen from several kilometres away.
Villages Evacuated, Panic Ensues
Authorities evacuated residents of Irusumanda, Gudapalli and nearby villages, with roughly 600 people moved to safer locations as a precaution. District officials issued safety warnings urging villagers to avoid using electrical appliances or open flames while the blaze was active, to reduce the risk of further ignition.
Emergency Response: Teams on the Ground
ONSCP and local fire departments responded swiftly. Senior company officials from Rajahmundry joined district authorities at the site to assess the damage and coordinate firefighting efforts. Multiple fire tenders and support units were deployed as cooling operations continued around the affected area.
No Casualties, But Major Impact
Thankfully, no deaths or injuries have been reported so far, according to company and administration officials. The affected area was remote — at least 500–600 metres from the nearest human habitation — likely minimising the risk to lives. Schools in the area were temporarily closed due to safety concerns.
What’s Being Done to Control the Well
ONGC confirmed that the site was cordoned off, and crisis management teams (CMT and RCMT) were mobilised to stabilise the well. Plans include well-capping options and consultation with international well-control experts to safely stop the leak and prevent future incidents.
Local Environment and Agriculture Affected
The gas leak and ensuing fire affected nearby agricultural land, including paddy fields and coconut plantations. Thick gas clouds blanketed the area before ignition, contributing to the widespread panic among villagers and the rapid evacuation efforts.
Conclusion: Preparedness and Safety First
The Konaseema ONGC well fire stands as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in hydrocarbon operations. While no casualties have been reported — a relief for families and workers alike — the incident highlights the importance of stringent safety practices, quick emergency response, and ongoing monitoring of energy infrastructure. Local authorities and ONGC’s crisis teams continue to work to contain the blaze and prevent further escalation, reinforcing that preparedness saves lives even in the most dangerous situations.
