A massive fire broke out in a multi-storey building in the Tiljala area of Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon, creating panic among residents and nearby shop owners. Thick black smoke quickly engulfed the building after the blaze reportedly started on the lower floor that was being used as a leather godown. Witnesses said flames spread within minutes, forcing several occupants to rush for safety. Fire officials immediately deployed multiple fire engines to control the rapidly growing fire.

Trapped Inside Smoke-Filled Rooms

According to fire department officials, five people became trapped inside the building as smoke filled the staircase and corridors. In a desperate attempt to escape the flames, the victims reportedly locked themselves inside a bathroom. However, the dense smoke created a suffocating environment, making rescue extremely difficult for firefighters. Rescue teams later evacuated all five victims and rushed them to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Two Lives Lost, Several Critical

Doctors at the state-run National Medical College and Hospital confirmed that two people lost their lives due to severe burn injuries and suffocation. Three others remain in critical condition and are currently undergoing treatment. Authorities stated that the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, though a forensic investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.

Government Orders Immediate Probe

Following the deadly incident, the West Bengal government ordered a detailed investigation into the fire. Officials have also directed the police to register an FIR and examine whether illegal industrial activities were being carried out inside the building. A special committee involving senior officials from the fire department, police, and municipal authorities has been formed to submit a complete report on the incident.

A Wake-Up Call for Fire Safety

The tragic Kolkata fire once again highlights the growing dangers of operating commercial activities inside residential and mixed-use buildings without proper fire safety measures. As cities become more crowded, experts warn that ignoring fire compliance norms can turn minor electrical faults into deadly disasters within minutes. This heartbreaking incident serves as a strong reminder that fire safety is not just a legal requirement — it is essential to saving lives.
