A massive fire broke out at a shoe manufacturing factory in Mangolpuri Industrial Area, Phase-I, Delhi, on the night of 30 October 2026, claiming four lives and leaving two people injured.
According to reports, the fire was reported at approximately 9:32 PM and initially originated in the basement of the factory. The Delhi Fire Service deployed around 20 fire tenders to the location to control the blaze and carry out rescue operations.
During the emergency response, six people were rescued from inside the building in an unconscious condition and rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, four were declared dead at the hospital, while the remaining two were admitted for medical treatment.
Fire officials stated that heavy smoke spread from the basement to the upper floors, trapping people inside the building. One person was rescued from the staircase on the third floor, while five others were rescued from the fourth floor.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze within the basement, preventing it from spreading further through the structure. The firefighting operation continued for several hours, followed by cooling operations.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established. Police have initiated an investigation and summoned the factory owner for questioning. Authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the number of workers present at the time.
Key Fire Safety Lessons
This tragic incident highlights the importance of implementing proper fire safety measures in industrial buildings:
- Fire Detection Systems: Install suitable smoke and heat detectors, particularly in basements, storage areas and production spaces.
- Fire Suppression Systems: Provide appropriate firefighting systems based on the building’s occupancy, fire risks and applicable regulations.
- Smoke Management: Ensure adequate smoke extraction and ventilation arrangements to prevent smoke from spreading to upper floors and escape routes.
- Emergency Exits: Maintain clearly marked, accessible and unobstructed emergency exits and staircases.
- Electrical Safety: Conduct regular inspections of electrical wiring, distribution panels and machinery to identify potential fire hazards.
- Fire Safety Training: Train employees in emergency response, evacuation procedures and the safe use of firefighting equipment.
- Regular Fire Audits: Conduct periodic fire safety inspections and maintain all installed fire protection systems in operational condition.
Oustfire Conclusion
The Mangolpuri factory fire is a tragic reminder that industrial fire incidents can have devastating consequences, particularly when people become trapped by heavy smoke and inadequate evacuation arrangements.
In industrial facilities, fire safety must go beyond the installation of firefighting equipment. A comprehensive approach should include early fire detection, suitable suppression systems, effective smoke management, clearly accessible escape routes and regular employee training.
Factory owners and facility managers must prioritise preventive maintenance, periodic fire safety audits and emergency preparedness to minimise risks and protect workers’ lives.
