A tragic accident on the Ahmedabad–Rajkot National Highway in Gujarat turned into a nightmare after a private luxury bus rammed into an asphalt-laden tanker near Sangani village in Chotila taluka. The collision, which took place around 1:30 AM, instantly triggered a massive fire that engulfed the bus within seconds. Panic spread among passengers as flames rapidly consumed the vehicle. According to officials, at least four passengers lost their lives while ten others suffered serious burn injuries. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to control the blaze and rescue trapped passengers.
Passengers Trapped As Flames Spread Rapidly
Eyewitnesses described horrifying scenes as passengers screamed for help while locals attempted desperate rescue efforts. The fire spread so quickly that several passengers had little time to escape. Some survivors reportedly broke bus windows to jump out and save themselves from the inferno. Authorities confirmed that many victims suffered severe burns, while the bodies of those killed were charred beyond recognition. The intensity of the fire has raised serious concerns about emergency preparedness and passenger safety in long-distance buses.
Tyre Burst Suspected To Have Triggered Disaster
Preliminary investigations suggest that the tanker’s tyre burst while moving on the highway, forcing the driver to brake suddenly. The bus travelling behind reportedly crashed into the tanker moments later, causing the explosion-like fire. Police officials stated that the tanker was carrying asphalt material, which may have intensified the flames after the collision. Investigators are now examining whether overspeeding, poor visibility, or mechanical failure contributed to the deadly crash. Authorities have also launched efforts to trace the tanker driver, who allegedly fled the scene after the accident.
Rescue Teams Battle Flames Through The Night
Fire brigade teams, police personnel, and ambulance services reached the accident spot shortly after receiving distress calls. Rescue operations continued through the night as officials struggled to control the raging fire and evacuate injured passengers. The injured victims were shifted to Chotila Government Hospital and later referred to Rajkot Civil Hospital for advanced treatment. Officials stated that around 35 to 40 passengers were travelling in the bus at the time of the accident. The tragic incident caused major traffic disruption on the highway for several hours
